Rwanda is a lush, vibrant, and beautiful country known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” The bustling capital city, Kigali, is full of positive energy and is host to a thriving local and expat community. In the rural areas 2-3 hours outside the city, the coffee sector continues to revitalize a nation that has suffered much over the last three decades.
New development in the Rwandan coffee industry started in the year 2000, and one of the people at the forefront was Epiphanie Mukashyaka. She began her career in the wake of losing her husband, and was determined to turn the coffee trees he left behind into a successful business. After proving her savvy by working with other small holders, she was granted a loan to open the Remera washing station in 2003. This was the start of Bufcafe, which proved so successful that a second washing station, Nyarusiza, was established in 2006. Bufcafe has had a significant impact on the community in Nyamagabe, providing water, electricity, job security, and a vision of top quality coffee to thousands of people.
Epiphanie’s sons Sam and Aloys help with sales and marketing, and coordinate cuppings that have brought the company lots of international attention. They have been consistent high scorers in Cup of Excellence, and continue push the envelope on what great Rwandan coffee can be.
This is our third season working with Bufcafe, and we are proud to offer another fine example of washed bourbon from the Nyarusiza station. As many as four thousand farmers contribute to this coffee, which undergoes an 8-12 hour fermentation process followed by a secondary 24-hour soak. After soaking, the coffee is spread out on raised beds in the sun for sorting and drying.
12oz of whole beans.
Our premium coffee beans are roasted daily at our Greenpoint, Brooklyn roastery. We ship only whole bean coffee and do not grind the beans prior to shipping. Coffee is packaged in sealed valve bags. We roast to order!
