The community of Monserrate consists of a single paved road straddling a ridge in the Cordillera Central mountain range in the department of Huila. At the top of the road is a large, brick church that houses a shrine to the Virgen de Monserrate, a statue of a black Virgin Mary that’s become a regional tourist attraction. Most residents of Monserrate and surrounding communities are small-scale farmers who grow coffee as a cash crop.
Through their dedicated partnership with Atlas Coffee Importers, the Monserrate community has been able to flourish, and they consistently showcase fantastic large scale production. Inspired by the potential for exceptional coffees, Atlas introduced a microlot competition in 2008 which has been an annual source of friendly competition among the coffee growers.
We’ve worked with Monserrate since 2010, purchasing coffees from their community lot as well as their microlot competition. This group continues to impress us with coffee that is easy to work with and incredibly versatile. The sweetness and body make it a great candidate for cold brew, filter roast, or espresso.
