Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society, Producer
SL-28, SL-34. Grown at 1890 masl.
The Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society was founded in 1956 and currently represents 15,000 members and 19 washing stations. Othaya F.C.S. has its own dry mill, which was funded by the farmers so that they would have more control over the marketing of their coffee after delivery. Gatuyaini washing station is located in the same compound as this dry mill, which is situated about 1.5km from Othaya town between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. The wet mill manager, Mr. Wakahara, has been with Othaya for over 17 years and is in his third year at Gatuyaini. His presence has had a strong impact on the quality and increase in production volume at Gatuyaini. Working in conjunction with Mr David Wairagu, the dry mill manager and head of QC, the team at Gatuyaini is able to ensure that all of the Othaya coffees are improving every year.
