Alejandro Zelaya Andrade, Producer
Bourbon, Caturra. Grown at 1500-1600 masl.
Aragón is located just outside the city of Antigua, which is home to hundreds of beautiful old churches and cathedrals. Three large volcanoes surround the city and are responsible for the incredibly fertile soil that gives the region its reputation for superior coffees.
Luis Pedro Zelaya, who is in charge of Zelcafe and Beneficio Bella Vista, has been integral in creating a sustainable partnership with his family and the small-holder farmers of the Antigua region. Each year we visit Bella Vista to cup hundreds of samples in order to select the coffees that will make up our menu offerings. This is our sixth season working together.
Aragón is owned and operated by Luis’s cousin Alejandro Zelaya Andrade. He has owned the farm for about nine years and he cultivates caturra and bourbon. Aragón is surprisingly flat, a result of the natural elevation of the area (around 1600 masl). The pruning technique there helps to promote continuous growth from year to year–the trees are cut every three years, which means every third row is short. This system allows for plenty of room between the trees to avoid competition for sunlight and nutrients. Holes (called cajuelas) are also created every three rows to help aerate the soil and collect organic matter.
In collaboration with Action Against Hunger, $1 from every retail bag of Aragón sold in our cafes, online, and to our wholesale customers will be donated to their humanitarian work in Guatemala. Visit cafegrumpy.com/coffee/acf to learn more.
