Mariano Mejía, Producer
Pacas and Catuaí grown at 1400-1600 masl.

Copo Mico has been an important part of the Cafe Grumpy roster since 2012, known for its unique green tea and currant jam characteristics. Under the careful direction of owner Mariano Mejia, the farm has made an astounding comeback from severe crop damage due to leaf rust. In order to demonstrate their commitment and initiative, Mariano and his son Mario planted a new portion of land with yellow catuai and red pacas, and constructed an impressive raised drying bed in 2014. After washing and drying coffees just outside of their home, our coffee from Copo Mico is delivered to Beneficio San Vicente for dry milling, quality analysis, and export.

Travel Notes:
The village of San Luis Planes is situated along a small stretch of mountain road in Santa Barbara, Honduras. Comprised of a few hundred households, a police station, church, clinic, and school, one could easily pass through without knowing how much amazing coffee is grown here. Mariano Mejia and his family live right off of this tiny road, where they depulp and dry the coffee we buy from Copo Mico. When pulling up to the house, the patio and wet mill are visible to the immediate right, and a raised parabolic drying structure is behind the house to the left.

We've been working with Mariano and his family since 2012, buying their full exportable production which ranges from about 10-25 bags per year. Copo Mico was another farm that suffered great loss in volume and quality during my first buying season due to coffee leaf rust (roya). One of my personal goals as a relationship coffee buyer is to understand the struggles associated with coffee production from year to year, and find ways to provide consistent support to our partners.

Having cupped fantastic coffee from Mariano, the farm's potential is always in my mind. With the assistance of our exporting partner Benjamin Paz, we've been able to navigate fair pricing for varying levels of quality over the past five years.

Touring the farm is a family affair, and Mariano, his sons, and grandchildren all gather into Benjamin’s truck to walk around and look at each year’s innovation. Beans, cabbage, corn, and plantains are found growing in between the coffee trees, and a variety of wild birds and monkeys call Copo Mico home.

Rehabilitating a farm is no easy feat, especially when you are in your sixties and you've been a coffee farmer since you were 16 years old. It is truly a labor of love, and a commitment to the relationship we've built along with Mariano and his son Mario. Many of the developments in coffee are a waiting game, projects and qualities representing years of hard work and dedication. I am happy to return each season and see the Mejias working together to make Copo Mico better and better.
